How Often Do Harry and Meghan Come to the UK?

Inside the Sussexes’ Rare Visits and the Distance Between Two Worlds

Since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped away from royal life in 2020, their relationship with the United Kingdom has become increasingly complicated — and so have their visits. What was once their home is now a place of brief, emotionally charged appearances, often marked by tension, duty, and the lingering question: can the Sussexes ever truly return?

Harry’s Short and Symbolic Visits

In recent years, Prince Harry has made only a handful of trips back to the UK. Each visit, though brief, carries weight and public scrutiny. Most recently, the Duke of Sussex flew to London to attend charity events, including the WellChild Awards, an annual ceremony honouring inspirational children with serious illnesses — a cause Harry has championed for years.

But this trip was about more than charity. It came amid intense speculation over whether Harry would visit his father, King Charles III, who has been undergoing cancer treatment.

In the end, Harry did see the King — but only for about 50 minutes at Clarence House. The short meeting set off a flurry of headlines, with royal observers debating what the brevity of the encounter meant. Some saw it as a hopeful sign of reconciliation; others viewed it as proof of the deep emotional distance that remains between father and son.

“It wasn’t about the length of the visit — it was about the fact it happened at all,” one royal source remarked. “Both men are cautious, but there’s still love there.”

Meghan’s Reluctance to Return

While Harry continues to visit the UK on occasion, Meghan Markle has not returned often — if at all — in recent years. The Duchess of Sussex’s absence is as noticeable as it is deliberate.

After facing relentless media scrutiny and public criticism during her time as a working royal, Meghan appears to have little desire to re-enter that environment. Her last significant appearance in the UK was during Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022, where she stood beside Harry during one of the most solemn and scrutinized royal events in decades.

Since then, Meghan has focused her attention on life in California, their family, and her work with the Archewell Foundation.

“For Meghan, the UK holds painful memories,” a royal insider explained. “She’s found peace in California, and she doesn’t see value in reopening old wounds.”

No Longer a Base in Britain

The couple’s visits to the UK have become even rarer since they were asked to vacate Frogmore Cottage, their Windsor home gifted by the late Queen Elizabeth II. Without a British residence, their stays are now short and heavily managed.

When Harry does come to the UK, he typically stays in hotels or at private residences. This change underscores the stark difference between his former royal life and his current independence.

“Not having a base in the UK is both symbolic and practical,” said one royal observer. “It means Harry is no longer part of the royal rhythm — he’s a visitor now, not a resident.”

A Deep but Distant Connection

Despite the physical and emotional distance, Harry’s ties to the UK — and the royal family — remain significant. He is still fifth in line to the throne, and his patronages and military associations continue to reflect his commitment to service.

However, his relationship with his family, particularly his brother Prince William, remains strained. The two have reportedly had little direct contact since the publication of Harry’s memoir, Spare, which exposed painful family conflicts to the public.

“The UK visits are professional and purposeful now,” one royal commentator said. “Harry comes to support causes close to his heart, not to play the royal role he once did.”

What the Future Holds

As King Charles continues his recovery and the monarchy faces public challenges, there’s ongoing speculation about whether Harry and Meghan could ever resume a more active role in royal life. Insiders suggest that while reconciliation isn’t impossible, a full return seems unlikely.

For now, Harry’s occasional, fleeting trips back to Britain serve as emotional touchpoints — reminders of a family he’s both part of and apart from. Meghan, meanwhile, seems content to support from afar, focused on her life in the U.S.

A Kingdom Apart

Harry and Meghan’s relationship with the UK is best described as “distant but enduring.” While their home, careers, and future lie firmly in California, the emotional pull of Britain — and the royal family — will likely never fade completely.

Every time Harry steps onto British soil, the cameras turn, the headlines swirl, and the question resurfaces: is this a visit of duty — or a step toward healing?

For now, the answer remains the same — a brief return, a meaningful cause, and then back to California, where the Sussexes continue to write their story, far from the gilded walls of Buckingham Palace.
