Prince William discloses routine Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis 'adore' at home

Maverick at the Palace: The Action-Packed Sequel the Wales Children ‘Adore’

While the BAFTAs are often a night of high fashion and prestigious dramas, Prince William used his recent appearance at the 2026 awards to reveal a more relatable, adrenaline-fueled side to life at Adelaide Cottage. Amidst the glitz of the Royal Festival Hall, the Prince of Wales confessed that when it comes to family movie night, one particular action-packed sequel rules the remote: Top Gun: Maverick.

Speaking on the red carpet—the couple's first joint appearance since the arrest of Prince Andrew—William shared that Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis are "massive fans" of the Tom Cruise blockbuster. The Prince, who has a well-documented "bromance" with Cruise, didn't hold back his enthusiasm for the 2022 hit, admitting he is "a little biased" but remains baffled that the film didn't sweep even more awards.

A Royal Need for Speed

It isn't just about the popcorn for the Wales family; the film has sparked a genuine fascination with the "behind-the-scenes" magic of cinema.

  • The "Cruise" Connection: William famously hosted Tom Cruise at the London premiere of the film in 2022, and it seems the actor's commitment to "serious action scenes" has made a lasting impression on the royal children.

  • A High-Flying Routine: Insiders suggest the kids "adore" the high-octane energy of the sequel, often re-watching the flight sequences.

  • Learning Through Film: Princess Catherine added that movies have become a vital tool for the family, helping them navigate "hard conversations" and connect over shared stories.

"Not in a Calm State"

The Prince’s candidness didn't stop at his children’s movie tastes. In a rare moment of vulnerability, he admitted he was avoiding the more somber nominated films, like the Shakespearean tragedy Hamnet, because of the current family pressures. "I need to be in quite a calm state and I am not at the moment," he told organizers, referencing the heavy atmosphere following his uncle's recent legal troubles.

Despite the "anxiety and tension" noted by body language experts, the couple’s focus on their children’s hobbies—from George’s guitar playing to their collective love for the "danger zone"—offered a glimpse of a family trying to maintain a normal, fun-filled home life behind palace walls.

"How it doesn't win anything, ever? That's what I care about," William joked about Top Gun, sounding less like a future King and more like every other dad defending his favorite movie.
