Prince Harry 'fears being stripped of royal titles' by William, expert claims

As of Saturday, March 28, 2026, a wave of reports from royal experts and a bombshell new biography suggest that Prince Harry is increasingly "terrified" that his brother, Prince William, will move to strip the Sussexes of their royal titles once he ascends the throne.

The fear, while not publicly expressed by Harry, has become a central theme in the recently serialized book Betrayal: Power, Deceit and the Fight for the Future of the Royal Family by author Tom Bower.

1. The "Andrew Precedent"

According to Bower, the catalyst for Harry’s anxiety was the swift and "ruthless" downfall of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor in late 2025 and early 2026.

  • Status Is Not Invincible: Seeing the King formally strip Andrew of his "Prince" and "HRH" titles via Letters Patent reportedly served as a "unpredicted shock" to Harry.

  • The "No Prisoners" Future: Bower claims that Harry now realizes his own status is "no longer invincible." He reportedly fears that William—who has shown "no mercy" in dealing with family scandals—will view the removal of the Sussex titles as a necessary step to "contain" the monarchy.

2. The "Commercialization" Conflict

A major driving force behind the potential title removal is the ongoing tension regarding Meghan Markle’s brand, As Ever.

  • Misuse for Profit: Royal insiders suggest that the Prince and Princess of Wales are particularly "irked" by the continued use of royal status to promote commercial ventures in the US.

  • The "Banishment" Fear: Harry reportedly believes that losing the titles would not just be a blow to his ego, but would effectively "banish" him from Britain, making him persona non grata and leaving him with "no status or reason to return to England."

3. The Threat to Archie and Lilibet

The most personal aspect of this fear involves the couple’s children, Prince Archie (6) and Princess Lilibet (4).

  • Removing the "HRH": While the children currently hold their titles as grandchildren of the Sovereign, experts suggest William could easily remove them once he becomes King to ensure only "working royals" carry such styles.

  • A "Slimmed-Down" Casualty: If William pursues his vision for a radically smaller monarchy, Harry reportedly fears his children will be the first to be "erased" from the official royal record.

The Sussex Response

A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has hit back at the claims in Bower’s book, labeling the author’s commentary as a "fixation" rather than a factual account. They described the extracts as "deranged conspiracy and melodrama," asserting that those interested in facts should "look elsewhere."

However, royal commentator Mark Dolan noted this week that regardless of the book's tone, the constitutional reality remains: "The monarchy now depends on actually obliterating the Sussexes from our state of life... Harry's fear is almost certainly justified."
