Prince William makes major announcement in new statement

Mission to Mumbai: Prince William Shakes Up Earthshot Board for Global Expansion

In a move that signals a bold new chapter for his environmental legacy, Prince William has announced a major leadership shake-up for the Earthshot Prize.   On Monday, March 2, the Prince of Wales confirmed that Jesper Brodin, the former CEO of IKEA, will take over as the new Chair of the Board, succeeding the inaugural chair and climate heavyweight Christiana Figueres.

The announcement comes at a pivotal "midway point" for the decade-long initiative, as William prepares to take the prestigious awards ceremony to Mumbai, India, in November 2026.   By bringing in a titan of sustainable business like Brodin, William is signaling that the next five years of Earthshot will focus on scaling grassroots innovations into global industrial solutions.

A New Visionary at the Helm

The Prince expressed his "deep gratitude" to Figueres, who will remain on the Earthshot Prize Council, for her role in turning a "bold idea" into a world-class platform. However, the appointment of Brodin—a man who famously proved that "sustainability is good for business"—marks a strategic pivot toward commercial viability.

"I am delighted to welcome Jesper as our new Chair," William said in an official statement. "Jesper has shown how business can drive prosperity for our planet, which will be invaluable to our Earthshot community as we accelerate bold solutions."

Why the Shake-Up Matters

This leadership transition is more than just a boardroom change; it’s a tactical alignment for the 2026 mission:

  • The "India Factor": India is home to more Earthshot finalists and winners than any other nation.   Hosting the 2026 awards in Mumbai will put a spotlight on the country’s role as a "global technology leader."

  • Scaling for 2030: With the goal of repairing the planet by the end of the decade, the Prize needs leaders who understand global supply chains and mass-market implementation.

  • A Legacy of Impact: To date, Earthshot has awarded £25 million to winners and helped mobilize over $500 million in additional investment—a figure William is clearly keen to grow.

Leading Through the Storm

The timing of this "major announcement" hasn't gone unnoticed. While the British headlines remain fixated on the "royal crisis" surrounding his uncle, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, William is deliberately channeling his energy into the "Earthshot decade."

By focusing on a 2030 goal, the future King is projecting an image of a monarch who is unswayed by short-term scandals and deeply invested in the survival of the planet. As the "Prince of Progress," William’s latest statement is a clear message: while the family's past is under scrutiny, he is firmly in control of the future.
