Princess Kate and Prince William leave Londoners speechless as they visit Borough Market
Londoners and tourists alike were left rubbing their eyes in disbelief on Thursday, March 12, 2026, when the Prince and Princess of Wales arrived for a high-energy, unannounced tour of the iconic Borough Market. Swapping palace protocol for aprons and barista training, the couple spent the morning "getting their hands dirty" at some of the market’s most famous stalls.
The visit, which focused on London’s trade and community spirit along the River Thames, saw the royals in high spirits, engaging in friendly competition and even serving up desserts to stunned shoppers.
The "Crumble King" and the Topping Artist
The highlight of the tour was a stop at Humble Crumble, the social-media-famous dessert business. After meeting founder Kim Innes—whom Kate enthusiastically told she had watched on MasterChef the previous night—the couple donned aprons and stepped behind the counter.
The Division of Labor: Prince William took charge of the heavy lifting, ladling out portions of fruit and crumble.
The "Fluff" Master: Princess Kate was tasked with the "embellishments," which included pouring vanilla custard, piping pink marshmallow fluff, and adding a variety of sprinkles.
The Verdict: The first customer, CEO Gabriel Unger, gave the royal-made dessert a glowing review, proclaiming it "very good" after a quick taste test.
Barista Skills and a "Decaf" Rejection
The royals also visited Change Please, a social enterprise that trains people experiencing homelessness to become baristas.
Kate, keen to learn, darted behind the counter and asked for a tutorial on coffee grinding and milk texturing. Staff member Lorent Maliqi was reportedly "surprised" by her skills, noting she got the milk texture "right on point." However, when she proudly handed the finished cappuccino to her husband, William immediately turned it away.
"Is it decaf?" he asked. When Kate replied it was not, he jokingly suggested she sell it to someone else instead. Kate ended up carrying her own creation through the market, taking sips as they walked.
A Day of Cheese and "Beer Mile" Brewing
The Borough Market stop was just the beginning of a busy day in South London.
The Cheese Challenge: At Trethowan Brothers, the couple sampled award-winning Pitchfork Cheddar. William was particularly impressed by the massive wheels of cheese, asking, "Does anyone come in and ask for one of these?" before expertly cutting a wedge of Caerphilly under the owner's guidance.
The Beer Mile: Later, the pair headed to the Bermondsey Beer Mile. At the Southwark Brewing Company, they engaged in a pint-pulling contest. Despite her initial hesitation, Kate pulled a successful pint, though she politely declined to drink it.
Lifestyle Change: Speaking to Hannah Rhodes at Fabal Beerhall, Kate revealed she has been more "conscious" about alcohol since her health challenges in 2024, choosing to stick to soft drinks or honey-dipped sticks instead of the local ciders.
From the Market to the River
To cap off the day, the couple made a high-speed exit. They donned overalls and lifejackets to travel by an RNLI lifeboat to the Tower station. Both William and Kate took turns at the wheel, piloted by volunteer Storm Smith-Suckoo, as they learned about the vital life-saving work performed on the Thames.
They didn't arrive empty-handed, either; the royals brought a delivery of cinnamon buns and cakes from Borough Market to share with the duty crew.
