Real reason Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson didn't speak for one year

The "Fatal Footnote": The Real Reason Diana and Sarah Didn't Speak for a Year

As the world looks back at the complex dynamics of the royal family in early 2026, one of the most enduring mysteries remains the final year of the relationship between Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson. Though they were "best friends" who married into the Firm together, they were famously estranged when Diana tragically passed away in 1997.

The primary catalyst for the "Great Chill" of 1996 wasn't a grand betrayal or a secret affair—it was an anecdote about a pair of shoes.

The Plantar Wart Incident

In 1996, the Duchess of York released her first autobiography, My Story.    While the book contained many affectionate stories about her sister-in-law, it featured one specific line that proved to be the "fatal footnote."

Sarah wrote that while living in Clapham, Diana had generously given her all of her old shoes. However, she added a joke that backfired spectacularly:

"Diana helped me by giving me all her shoes (and, less happily, her plantar warts).

For the image-conscious Princess of Wales, the public mention of a common foot ailment (verrucas) was seen as a "deep insult" and a breach of privacy.   Diana, who was already dealing with the high-stakes fallout of her own divorce from Prince Charles, reportedly cut Sarah out of her life immediately after the book’s publication.

A Promise Broken

According to former royal butler Paul Burrell, the "wart" comment was merely the tip of the iceberg. Diana had reportedly supported Sarah’s decision to write a memoir on one strict condition: Do not mention me or my children.

When the book hit the shelves filled with references to Diana and the young Princes William and Harry, the Princess felt "used" for commercial gain.

  • The "Envelopes" Scandal: Burrell claims that as a last-ditch effort to reconcile, Sarah sent a letter to Diana in an envelope addressed by her young daughter, Princess Eugenie.

  • The Reaction: Diana allegedly saw this as "using a child to intervene" and was reportedly furious, telling Burrell it was a "last resort" that only pushed her further away.

The Unfinished Reconcilliation

Despite the silence, the bond between the two was never truly extinguished.   Sarah has since written in her second memoir, Finding Sarah, that she never fully understood the "official" reason for the silence, noting that once Diana "got something into her head, it stayed there for a while."

However, a heartbreaking detail emerged years later: The day before she died, Diana reportedly called a mutual friend and asked, "Where’s that Red?    I want to talk to her." It seems the Princess was finally ready to break the one-year silence—a call that, tragically, Sarah would never get to answer.

The Legacy in 2026

Today, as Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie find themselves "distanced" from the Wales household due to their father’s scandals, the parallels are hard to ignore. The story of Diana and Sarah serves as a reminder that in the Royal Family, a single word—or a single shoe—can change the course of history.
