Palace shares rare update on King Charles’ State Visit to see Donald Trump

As of Saturday, April 4, 2026, Buckingham Palace has officially broken its silence regarding the upcoming United States State Visit. Despite weeks of intense public debate and high-profile calls for the trip to be delayed or cancelled, the Palace confirmed on March 31 that King Charles III and Queen Camilla will indeed travel to the U.S. from April 27 to April 30, 2026.

In a move that clarifies weeks of speculation, Buckingham Palace has issued a rare update confirming the first State Visit of a British Monarch to the United States in nearly two decades. The visit is set to proceed as planned, with the King and Queen highlighting the deep historical ties and modern partnership between the two nations during a milestone year for American history.

A Firm Commitment Amidst Global Tension

The decision to move forward comes despite significant domestic pressure.   Following the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East and subsequent diplomatic friction between the U.K. and U.S. leadership, several public figures—including Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey and senior Labour MP Emily Thornberry—had suggested a "pause" or "delay" to avoid any professional embarrassment.

However, the Palace statement was clear:

  • Official Guidance: The trip is being undertaken "on the advice of His Majesty’s Government," emphasizing that the visit is a key tool of British diplomacy regardless of current political complexities.

  • Historic Milestone: A primary focus of the trip is to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American Independence, celebrating the shared democratic traditions that both nations uphold.

The Highlight: Addressing the U.S. Congress

Perhaps the most "historic" element of the update is the confirmation that King Charles will address a Joint Meeting of Congress on April 28.

  • The 35-Year Gap: This rare honor has not been extended to a British Sovereign since Queen Elizabeth II spoke to the legislature in 1991.

  • Bipartisan Welcome: The invitation was a joint effort from House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate leaders from both parties, who described the "American experiment" as enduring in part because of the British traditions from which it began.

Resilience on the Home Front

The Palace update also followed a display of "business as usual" during the Royal Maundy Service in Wales on April 2.   Despite some localized protests and graffiti at St. Asaph Cathedral, the King was seen in high spirits, personally distributing Maundy money to 154 recipients in recognition of their community service.

Palace officials used the successful Welsh visit to pivot the narrative back to the King’s primary role: a "unifying force" who remains committed to his duties both at home and on the world stage.

Looking Toward the White House

In the United States, President Donald Trump has been vocal in his support for the visit, taking to social media to call it a "momentous occasion" and praising the King as a leader he "greatly respects." The upcoming White House banquet on April 28 is expected to be a pinnacle of the tour, designed to celebrate the "special relationship" in grand style.
