Buckingham palace offers glimpse into King Charles' garden part: 8,000 Heroes Gather for First Garden Party of the Season

On Wednesday, May 6, 2026, the lawns of Buckingham Palace were transformed into a sea of colorful dresses and morning suits as King Charles III and Queen Camilla hosted the first garden party of the year.    Despite the characteristic grey London skies, the event saw approximately 8,000 guests gather to celebrate the dedication of the UK's frontline workers and volunteers.

Honoring First Responders

This year’s inaugural party carried a special focus on emergency service workers. The King and Queen spent several hours mingling with paramedics, police officers, and firefighters, personally thanking them for their service.

Among the attendees was paramedic Claire Swinbourne, who was nominated by colleagues for her work raising awareness about assaults on emergency workers.   The King took a moment to personally speak with her, reinforcing his stance that violence against public servants is unacceptable.

While the Royal Family was the main draw, the undeniable star of the afternoon was a two-year-old cocker spaniel named Vegas.

Vegas, a service dog trained by the charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, stole the hearts of both the public and the royals. The pup gave an enthusiastic greeting to the King and Princess Anne, even attempting to "find truffles" by digging into the pristine palace lawn—a moment that prompted a laugh from the Princess Royal, who joked, "Let me know if you find any."

Event Highlights:

  • The Royal Lineup: The King and Queen were joined by the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, the Princess Royal, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.   (The Prince and Princess of Wales did not attend).

  • A Special Milestone: The event coincided with the third anniversary of the King’s coronation and the 7th birthday of Prince Archie.

  • Royal Fashion: Queen Camilla wore a pastel blue embroidered coat dress by Fiona Clare, while the Duchess of Edinburgh opted for a vibrant coral midi dress.

  • Summer Tradition: This was the first of three scheduled parties at Buckingham Palace this month, with a fourth to be held at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in June.

As military bands played wartime classics and jazz numbers, guests enjoyed traditional tea and cakes, marking a successful start to the 2026 royal summer season.
